Araw ng Dilaw : A Yellow Day for Ninoy Aquino

Today, August 21, 2009 is the 26th anniversary of Benigno “Ninoy” S. Aquino Jr’s assassination upon his return on the Philippine ground way back in 1983.

“The Filipino is worth dying for”, a famous quote of Ninoy Aquino. I always see this quote on the Philippine 500 peso bill wherein he is the featured Filipino icon.

Actually, I wasn’t born yet during the time of his death. I learned everything about Ninoy Aquino at school in Social Studies subject. Internet and online videos are not that widespread during those time.

Only this time after his wife, former Philippine President Corazon Aquino recently passed away that I learned a lot about his fight for democracy and what happened during the time of EDSA Revolution. A lot of media companies broadcast again the archive videos of the past and that helped me understand and appreciate more of what they have done for our country.

So today, in honor for his sacrifices and for his late wife, former President Corazon Aquino who continued and won the fight of regaining the country’s democracy, the Benigno S. Aquino Jr. Foundation has declared this day, “Araw ng Dilaw” (Yellow Day).

This campaign encourages all Filipinos to wear something yellow and light a yellow candle to remember Ninoy and Cory’s love for the Filipino. Also, if your on your car on road, switch on your hazard lights from 6pm to 7pm and spread the country’s Yellow Spark far and wide along with thousands other cars.

Show your love, let’s all celebrate this Yellow Day.
