Manny Pacquiao on Time Magazine Asia Edition Cover

After a successful TV appearance on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Filipino boxing superstar Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao finds himself on the cover of a magazine, not just any magazine but on TIME Magazine Asia edition according to a boxing website, fightnews. This makes him the second Filipino to be on TIME magazine’s cover after late former President of the Philippines, Corazon Aquino.

Time Magazine features Pacquiao’s life, inside and out of the boxing ring on a five page story that will be included in all global editions and will be on the newsstands this weekend.

You can read this article entitled “The Meaning of Manny” by Howard Chua-Eoan and Ishaan Tharoor of Time Magazine and also view some photos of “The Rise of Manny Pacquiao: A look at the Filipino boxer’s career in and out of the ring.”

Pacquiao is the first fighter in twenty years to appear in the cover of the prestigious magazine, the second non-heavyweight champion, the second Filipino and the first Asian athlete ever.

Other sports icons who have been featured here in the past are golf’s Tiger Woods, basketball’s Michael Jordan, track and field’s Michael Johnson, baseball’s Pete Rose, tennis’ Williams sisters, and most recently, swimming’s Michael Phelps.

Early this 2009, the Filipino boxing superstar ranked 22nd on Time Magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential Person in the World. He was also 3rd on Sports Illustrated’s top earning non-American athletes and 24th on AskMen.com’s Top 49 Most Influential Men List. Note that he’s the only Filipino on all lists.

On November 14 (November 15 in Manila), the pound for pound king Pacquiao is set to fight Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico for his World Boxing Organizaion (WBO) welterweight belt.

Manny Pacquiao became world champion as a flyweight, super bantamweight, featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight and light welterweight. He’s now aiming to capture a historical seventh world title in seven different weight divisions if he wins against Cotto for the welterweight belt.
