Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao defeated Puerto Rico’s boxing star Miguel Cotto to become the new World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion. This win cemented his statute as boxing’s pound for pound king and one the greatest boxers of all-time as this championship is his seventh (7th) belt in seven different weight divisions, a first in boxing history.
Pacquiao has won the world championships in the flyweight (112 pounds), super bantamweight (122 lbs), featherweight (126 lbs), super featherweight (130 lbs), lightweight (135 lbs), and light welterweight (140 lbs). Now as a welterweight (147 lbs, catch weight of 145 lbs).
Cotto (34 wins with 27 knockouts and now 2 losses) seems to keep up with Pacquiao on the first few rounds of their “Firepower” bout. Cotto then got knocked down twice on the third (3rd) and fourth (4th) rounds. Although he possibly won the fifth (5th) round, he appeared to tire progressively on the later rounds.
A minute into round 12, it was obvious that Cotto couldn’t throw any more decent punches that triggered referee Kenny Bayless to stop the fight awarding the match to Pacquiao by TKO. Pacquiao (now 50 wins, 3 losses and 2 draws) also won the the first ever World Boxing Council (WBC) Diamond Belt.
