Mosley vs Berto Boxing Fight Clash is Off

The welterweight title unification championship bout between “Sugar” Shane Mosley and Andre “The Beast” Berto on January 30 is off or canceled. Berto withdrew from the bout because of the recent disaster that happened on his descent home.

Andre Berto is a Haitian-American professional boxer and he represented Haiti at the 2004 Olympics. Currently, he holds the WBC welterweight belt.

The recent earthquake that rocked Haiti last January 12 made a huge impact on Berto’s decision of pulling out of the title match with Mosley which he said that’s “an opportunity I have dreamt of since childhood.”

Berto’s parents are from Haiti and has many relatives on the island. In the past weeks, he has been training in Florida and was scheduled to arrive in Las Vegas on Wednesday. Unfortunately he said that he could not go on because of the strain it caused him from what happened to his family.

According to Berto’s statement, “I lost several family members to the earthquake and after two days without word, was relieved to learn that my sister, Naomi and her daughter, Jessica, survived, but were left homeless. I have seen the pain in my parents’ eyes as they attempt to understand what has happened to our homeland and recognize a place they once called home.”

As a result of this disaster, I am mentally and physically exhausted and therefore I have no choice but to withdraw from my bout on January 30,” Berto added.

Berto said that he appreciated all the support and prayers for his family and for the people of Haiti. He also said, “The rebuilding of Haiti is not something that will happen overnight, but I am fully dedicated to helping the Haitian people recover from this catastrophic event.”

A lot of boxing fans may be disappointed that the Shane Mosley vs Andre Berto fight this January already closed its door, but it opens up a window to a potential big fight that may happen soon, a mega fight between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs Shane Mosley.
